The Warning of One is an absolutely ripper of an EP. Rebel Wizard, a one man project by NKSV, plays a style of metal they have dubbed ‘negative wizard metal.’ What this amounts to is a traditional heavy metal structure with significant black metal elements and the intensity of some of the best of the recent wave of blackened crust. This thing tears through you like a beast possessed, doing in roughly fifteen minutes the kind of sonic damage it takes some bands a full hour to deal out.
Everything on this album pushes forward, ever encroaching on your territory. The drums are basically heavy metal drumming, but with plenty of forward momentum. The bass rolls forward like a boulder down the far side of a mountain, causing immense amounts of barely perceived damage. Riff after vicious riff tear through you all while the vocals eviscerate. Really, the vocals are the finishing touch that takes this project into a realm all its own. I’m sure NKSV uses some kind of effects for the vocals, but they absolutely kill. Utterly intense!
Recommendation: Intriguing!
