It is my honor today to present a double track premiere from The Weight of Being by New Jersey grinders Organ Dealer. The album marks their second full length, and shows them to be a force to watch in the grindcore scene. We are able to present to you Truth Blinders and Endless Despondence in the video below. Both deal with societal issues, especially in the United States, and both absolutely rip. Buckets of blast beats join with angular riffs to create a righteous cacophony over which the varied vocal attack destroys everything in sight. Organ Dealer celebrates ten years as a band with The Weight of Being. In that time, they’ve released a demo, the monumental Visceral Infection in 2015, which first caught my attention, a single and two splits. Now Everlasting Spew presents their second full length on July 28th. The album is a visceral stew of rage filled grind in the tradition of Nasum and the grindier Napalm Death releases. Not content to just through noisy chaos at the wall to see what sticks, the quartet craft manic riffs that cut and bleed the listener, with obliterating drums, and a punchy dual vocal attack that really sets the band apart. I’m generally a sucker for dual vocals in grind, but the strength of all the vocals here is impressive, as is the overall composition of the chaos.
On the record, Eric Schnee handles the aforementioned plague of blasts, Trevor Graham rounds out the back end with obliterating bass, and also provides half of the vocal attack. The savage riffing comes courtesy of Jeff Knoblauch. The main vocalist is Scot Moriarty, though he has since moved on to be replaced by Chris Ward.
As with many grindcore bands, Organ Dealer have something to say. In Truth Blinders, the band call out those that would look away from the truth (something happening quite regularly in the US). The first lines they scream are:
Shield your eyes, from all that is true
Like a baby in the dark, sitting in your shit
At the end of the song, they clarify why we can’t just put our blinders on with the lines:
Hatred and fear kill innocent people while
Racist, shitty, ignorant fucks will, get their fill of the land
In Endless Despondence, the band speak to the dangers of the overwhelming nature of all the terrible things going on, asking us to:
Give me all the pills you can,
Take away anxiety I won’t feel this one more day
The attack on The Weight of Being is poignant and powerful, both lyrically and sonically. More than just being a band to watch (though they are that), they are a band to listen to, including in what they have to say to the world. Give this one many thoughtful spins. I know I will.
Biography: Hayduke X has been writing for MoshPitNation since June of 2016. He is also a contributor to The Metal Wanderlust.
