A little over two weeks ago, we premiered The Archfiend’s Apothecary from “Ruin,” the debut album by Wounds. In that premiere, I wrote a full review (which you can read here), so I won’t belabor the point further. Among other things, I stated:
They do tech death correctly, or at least in a way that I can appreciate. There is plenty of high-wire guitar artistry and fancy technique, but at its core, this is an album I wouldn’t want to meet alone in a dark alley. There is also a tough, knuckle-dragging side to this album, and it’s all the better for it.
“Ruin” is a statement release for a band that is both long running in one way (20 year anniversary in two years) and still in its infancy (this is the debut full length). It is clear that the band has a clear and brutal vision, that they are gifted composers, and that they are talented musicians.
The key point here is that the album is excellent, a brutal example of tech death as it should be, chock full of malevolent soul and spiteful menace. Don’t sleep on this one.
